FAQ’s

What “type” of childbirth class is this?

There are many brands of childbirth classes such as Lamaze, Bradley or Hypnobirthing. This is a more comprehensive cooperative approach meaning we will review a wide array of coping tools including breathing techniques, partner and labor support, massage, positioning, medication options, mindfulness/focus techniques -all under the large umbrella of coping strategies. You will learn how to cope whether you want an unmedicated (natural) childbirth or plan on using pain relief medications at some point in your labor.

Can an online class really give me the physical tools I need to cope with childbirth?

This depends on the couple. There are “do now” activities as you learn coping techniques as part of a live action online format. To the extent that you participate you will learn physical components of the class. It is fine to just observe and listen but physical learning in the comfort of your own home while in an online class is valuable.

When should I take this class?

The childbirth preparation class is ideally taken in the 7th-8th month. Please make sure to take it prior to your 37th week of pregnancy as you are considered “term” at 37 weeks -meaning okay to go into labor -even though your due date is 40 weeks.

My doctor says I do not need a childbirth class-should I still take one?

Unless this is -let’s say -your third baby with two prior good experiences and you and your provider have known each other for years I would say: If your doctor says you do not need a childbirth preparation class you should probably change providers. Providers who discourage women getting information about how to cope with a challenging transition may not be acting in your or your baby’s best interest.

I had a c-section with my first. Can I take this class for a VBAC class?

You can , however I would suggest adding a one on one consult with me prior for one hour so we can review the first birth before class. You may be better served by private sessions. Email to discuss.

Wouldn’t it be better to a take a class in the facility where I am delivering so I know their procedures?

Most facilities offer tours of facilities where procedures can be explained . While this may stop due to increasing infection rates during COVID, some may offer virtual tours that you can find on their website reviewing normal protocols. The value of a class with other couples from many places is it allows a broad array of information. A group environment encourages learning from peer to peer as well as teacher to student. Having worked in this field for 25 years one thing that has impacted facility practice for the better is couples finding out others had access to things they did not and consumer pressure for more and better options. Group learning from different locations and settings encourages diversity of thought and experience; this is not just for academic environments but real life learning as well. Additionally times have changed with infection rates and many prefer learning in the safety and comfort of their own home now.

Can I take childbirth class as a Private class?

Yes. For a couple it is 6 hours of one on one online instruction at $75/hour for a total of $450. You will need to book 4, 90 minute sessions. Email to set up times.
